Axis Deer Origins & Habitat
The axis deer, also known as chital or spotted deer, originates from India and Nepal and was introduced to Texas nearly 100 years ago. These deer adapted well to the Texas landscape, where they are now commonly found both in free-ranging areas and on high-fence hunting ranches. Axis deer prefer grass, thick cover in the cedars, and lightly brushed areas, which are spread all across our ranch - making it an ideal location to hunt axis deer.
What do Axis Deer Look Like?
Trophy axis deer bucks have long, curving antlers that range from 27 to 36 inches in length and typically feature three points per side: a main beam (measured for length), a brow tine near the base (also called "fronts"), and a caudal tine (also called "inner tops"). Although the length of the main beam is the standard for trophy axis deer judgement, strong brow tines and caudal tines can make an impressive-looking trophy regardless of overall antler length.
In terms of body size, axis deer are generally larger and taller than most Texas whitetail deer, with bucks weighing up to 250 pounds and does reaching 150 pounds. They feature striking rusty red coats with white spots, with males exhibiting a distinct “unibrow” look due to a dark brown chevron between their eyes.
Between their impressive antlers and stunning coats, the axis deer is an exceptionally beautiful exotic trophy.
When do you Hunt Axis Deer?
Axis can be hunted year-round in Texas; however, we recommend hunting them between May and August, as this is when most bucks have hard antlers, meaning they are not in velvet and their antlers are fully grown. That said, if you are interested in specifically hunting a velvet buck, Sisco D Ranch can help you make that happen at the perfect time to hunt one with fully grown antlers while still in velvet.
How do you Hunt Axis Deer?
Axis deer can be extremely challenging to hunt, as they are nervous animals by nature and one of the most "switched on" deer species in the world. However, the challenge of hunting a trophy axis buck makes the hunt that much more rewarding.
We offer a variety of fully guided axis hunts depending on the hunter's preference and ability. Many hunters enjoy the excitement of a spot-and-stalk axis hunt, which requires comfortable hiking boots and pants. Others prefer a traditional stationary hunt, sitting in a stand and waiting for the deer to come to you for a more controlled shot scenario. We also offer the option of "safari-style" hunting, where we drive around the ranch in a 6-seater Polaris Ranger looking for your trophy. Whatever hunting method you choose, you can be assured that an axis deer trophy at Sisco D Ranch is worth the effort!
Is Axis Deer meat good?
Axis Deer meat is widely regarded as some of the best-tasting venison nature has to offer. This meat has a very low fat content, making it generally healthier than other types of meat and even other types of venison. Although it has lower fat, it still maintains a high protein content. Axis venison is known to be extremely tender with a mild game flavor. A trophy axis buck can weigh up to 250 pounds - that's a lot of delicious meat! Schedule your axis deer hunt with Sisco D Ranch today to fill your freezer with incredible venison.
